Lough Corrib Angling

September

September is a busy month for local anglers as the season draws to a close for trout fishing and everyone wants to make the most of it before the boats come out of the water (for those who don’t fish for Pike).

September is my favorite time on the lake, the fishing can be cracking and the weather usually supports fantastic traditional wet fly fishing. Long drift over deep water will no longer feel uncomfortable once you’ve fished the Corrib in September. The fish rise freely right on the surface to Sedge, Daddy and Daphnia patterns. A lot of anglers are starting to use very bright flies during this time specifically for Daphnia feeders, I’m personally not convinced that this is the way to go and I have in most cases far more success with more somber colours and traditional Peter and Bumble patterns. Corrib fish are weary and will come short more often than not to an Octopus for example, whereas they will take a well tied Peter more aggressively.

The end of the trout season is always celebrated with session in the local where stories are told and fish get bigger by the pint !
