Lough Corrib Angling

Fishing – Other Areas
Fishing on the following waters can be arranged if you want to vary your venues or angling.

Lough Mask
Lough Mask is a large and famous lough of 22000 acres. It has an excellent stock of wild brown trout averaging over 1lb, with many over the 3lb mark, and a few fish over 10lb’s caught every year. It is renowned for its excellent wet fly fishing throughout the season. The fly hatches are the same as those on the Corrib with some differences in the timing and initial appearance of certain insects.

Lough Mask is a big and dangerous expanse of water as underwater rocks are very difficult to see. Anglers new to the lake are strongly advised to use a guide. This lake is also subject to huge fluctuations in water level throughout the season, which is an added complexity for even the most experienced Mask boatmen.

Lough Carra
Lough Carra is a most unusual yet stunningly beautiful lake as it has a marl bottom, which can make you feel like you are in the Caribbean as opposed to Co Mayo, as a result the resident wild brownies have a different colouring to those found on Corrib and Mask. The water is crystal clear and fish can be clearly seen moving in the water to the fly.
The fishing is nothing short of excellent with the average size of wild trout being equal to if not greater than the other great western lakes. There are good hatches of duckfly from late March and lake olives appear in April. The mayfly hatch is spectacular and continues sporadically to the end of the season. Olives, Murroughs and sedge hatch from June to the end of the season.

Mountain and Inland Lakes
There is an abundance of water in this part of Ireland and most have a stock of fish. The lakes vary from wild mountain lakes to picturesque inland waters. There is both wild and stocked /supplemented fishing available. It is very likely that you could be the only one fishing one of these lakes. The average size fish varies from water to water. A lot of the lakes in Connemara hold sea trout for which a licence is required as well as a fishery permit, all of which can be arranged by Lough Corrib Angling.

Salt Water Fly Fishing
This is the fastest growing area of our sport. We are spoilt for choice in Ireland as many species can be caught on the fly throughout the season. This type of fishing is a good option for the summer months when lake fishing can sometimes be difficult. Catching three mackerel at one time on a fly rod is exciting to say the least as pound for pound they are among the hardest fighters in the sea. Pollock, Bass and Sea Trout also provide excellent sport.

At Lough Corrib Angling we are lucky enough to have access to accommodation and a boat on a remote beach in Co Kerry. Special packages for the more adventurous angler can be put together if planned well in advance of intended travel dates.

Sea angling is hugely popular in Ireland and the fishing is superb! Enquiries of this nature will be referred to a specialist outfit whose expertise lies in this area. This is a fantastic option if the trout fishing is difficult on very hot summer days for example, so you can go to sea during the day, have dinner and head back out on the lake for the evening rise!
