Lough Corrib Angling

February

February 15th marks the start of the trout season and fish can be taken on the fly from opening day. The best areas to fly fish are in and around the numerous shallows all around the lake. There is an old local saying that ‘The Trout are in the Fields’, this gives you an idea of what you need to do to catch the fish. Floating or intermediate lines are used for this type of fishing and traditional wet flies and shrimp imitations work well.

Fish can also be taken on fast sinking lines using lures or fry imitations. This can be a very exciting method as there is a greater chance of connecting with the larger fish which are normally not landed with on the fly with any regularity until later in the season.
This is also the time when a lot of locals troll the ‘Brickeen’ or minnow and this is probably a more succesful method of catching fish at this time of year due to the lack of any real fly hatches.
